Downs players suffer from flu

Mamelodi Sundowns have confirmed that most of its players have experienced a flu outbreak following the postponement of their DStv Premiership clash against Royal AM on Saturday due to heavy rains.

The game has been rescheduled for this afternoon (15h00) at Chatsworth Stadium after it was abandoned in the 25th minute of the contest due to a waterlogged pitch.

“Considering the symptoms, which are of a respiratory nature and affect almost the entire squad, the club is ensuring that all the necessary steps are taken to safeguard the players and everyone that they interact with on and off the field,” read Sundowns’ statement.

Meanwhile, team doctor Dr Carl Tabane added: “The players are being tested for the full flu panel that includes influenza, COVID-19, RSV PCR to establish the exact cause of the symptoms. In recent weeks, the country has witnessed an overlap in all these three viruses, and it is crucial that we conduct the testing as they present similar signs and symptoms. We continue to follow the necessary precautions.”

However, the club noted that it is committed to fielding its strongest team available this afternoon.
