CT City sink Maritzburg on their own turf

Khanyisa Mayo claimed the game’s only goal in the first half, as Cape Town City got the better of Maritzburg United 1-0 in their DStv Premiership clash at Harry Gwala Stadium on Wednesday night.

City were keen to test the Team of Choice defenders in the opening moments of the match, but their efforts were fruitless.

The game opened up as the first half began to draw to a close, and both goalkeepers were forced into action.

Mayo produced a perfect penalty to get his fourth goal of the season in the 45th minute of the showdown.

The game went into the interval with the KwaZulu-Natal side trailing behind by 1-0.

In the second stanza, Eric Tinkler’s side continued to probe and pushing forward in numbers – searching for a second goal without any luck.

Maritzburg needed something to lift the tension and the signs were encouraging as they grew increasingly into the match.

Ernst Middendorp’s boys kept pushing and missed a couple of glorious chances.

However, the Cape club were confident in their technical ability, playing out from the back even when they were under pressure, and they were disciplined too, offering the Blue Army little room to create.

The final whistle blew, with the gap remaining at one, as the Citizens claimed all valuable three points away from home.
