Marumo and Dan Malesela in negotiations over a new deal

Nedbank Cup finalists Marumo Gallants confirmed that talks are advanced with coach Dan Malesela to extend his stay at the club beyond this season.

Malesela joined Gallants in November 2021 and quickly turned the fortunes around, taking them to a 10th finish in the DStv Premiership and securing a spot in the CAF Confederations Cup.

The 56-year-olds current contract expires at the end of June 2022.

FARPost has gathered there is interest elsewhere for Malesela, but the club has expressed interest in continuing with him.

“The Chairman (Abram Sello) has opened up talks with him to extend his stay with Marumo Gallants,” club spokesperson Rufus Matsena told FARPost.

“So there is an offer that was tabled to him, but he also alluded that he wants to give the club first preference and of which as a club we believe it’s a good gesture.

“The negotiations are at an advanced stage, so we will take it from there. As a club, we feel it’s also fair that we continue with him, and it will be a positive move for the players and everybody,” added Matsena.

Matsena added that the club was yet to finalise who would leave and who would be staying. “Not yet; remember, we have players whose contracts will be ending at the end of June so are the players we are in negotiations with.

“We first need to consider that before we go to other players that might be released. We can’t just release players whereas you have those whose contracts are expiring,” he said.
