Mayo scores stunner, as CT City see off Arrows

Cape Town City claimed a 1-0 victory over Golden Arrows in the DStv Premiership encounter at Princess Magogo Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

After a scrappy start in the opening five minutes, clear-cut opportunities were scarce, with both sides predominantly concentrating on defending their goal.

Eric Tinkler’s men showed resistance at the back and tried to create chances via set-pieces, but Arrows proved to be too strong.

The hosts mainly tried to test Hugo Marques from a distance, however, their efforts were fruitless.

City dominated possession and controlled proceedings for the majority of the first period but could not find the way to unlock the home side’s rock-solid defence.

The showpiece went into the half-time break with a goalless scoreline.

Back out for the last 45, the Cape club began the second stanza in a similar fashion and came close to drawing the first blood when Craig Martin produced a fine cross in the box with Mogamat May’s diving header inched away from opening the scoring.

However, Abafana Bes’thende regained their confidence when the second half wore on, but could not find any luck in breaking the opposition’s defence.

The unfazed visitors did not sit back and watch their opponents come at them, instead, they pushed forward in numbers to prevail the KwaZulu-Natal-based outfit on their own turf.

Tinkler showed plenty of desire to wrap up the match with all three points and his prayers were answered when super-sub Khanyisa Mayo scored a winner in the 78th minute of the contest.

In the end, it was the Citizens who walked away victorious with all the three points.
