Mhango’s chance to play is closer – Fadlu Davids

Orlando Pirates co-coach Fadlu Davids has provided an update on the situation regarding striker Gabadinho Mhango.

The Malawian international has not featured for the Buccaneers since December 17 during the 4-1 defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns.

Despite a great showing at the Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon this past January, the 29-year-old continues to struggle to get game time at the club.

“I don’t like to talk about single players, I think we treat all our 36 players the same and definitely not only Gabadinho Mhango but Tshegofatso Mabasa, (Boitumelo) Radiopane who is scoring every week,” said Davids ahead of the Soweto derby against Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday.

“It is about managing the squad, yes as you saw in the last couple of matches, he has been in the squad and that is only a signal of his performances in training so it has definitely put him a step closer and fighting for a place. So is Tshegofatso Mabasa, so is Radiopane and that competition is strong.

“At the moment Gabadinho Mhango has the nod in the last few matches ahead of Tshegofatso Mabasa, ahead of Radiopane but they are working hard and they are pushing. They are fighting, (Zakhele) Lepasa, (Kwame) Peprah as well in the squad both doing well so that competition is strong,” he said.

“I can only send the signal not only to one player but to the entire squad to work hard, be ready because that opportunity can come at any moment.”
