Mokwena confident Shalulile will end goal drought

Peter Shalulile is a proven goal-scoring machine and has set the standards high in South Africa’s top-flight since joining Mamelodi Sundowns from Highlands Park.

However, the Namibian hitman is enduring an unusual dry spell in front of goal as he hasn’t scored in five games.

Sundowns co-coach Rulani Mokwena believes the Caf Champions League group stage tie away to Al Ahly on Saturday offers Shalulile a great chance to end his goal drought.

“I think it’s only a matter of time before Peter scores. We know his qualities and what he gives to the team. It’s not just about putting the ball into the back of the net,” said Mokwena.

Shalulile has netted 17 goals in all competitions this season with four assists to his name and Mokwena has no doubt that the striker will rediscover his form.

“He’s responsible, like all our other strikers, to start defending from the top, to help us start creating possibilities for penetrative movements,” added Mokwena.

“As long as he does that, and the bigger picture is for the team to benefit, we are content.

“The reality is we still have possibilities within the squad.  That’s why we’ve got to find the solutions and why we are here as coaches.

“Fortunately, we worked on things in this break, in different structures in attack, to try to see whether we could play a different way without some of our key players in attack.”
