Njabulo Blom deserves a big salary: Stan Matthews

SuperSport United CEO Stan Matthews has revealed that Gavin Hunt admires Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Njabulo Blom, insisting the versatile star deserves a big salary.

Blom’s contract impasse has made the headlines in recent months, with his agent Rob Moore saying Chiefs are offering his client a not-so-good deal.

Fresh reports now link the national team midfielder to SuperSport. Interestingly, SuperSport coach Hunt worked with Blom during his short stint at Chiefs.

However, Matthews insists his wages would be unaffordable for them. “He is a good player; coach Gavin Hunt likes him [Blom]. The contract is expiring at Kaizer Chiefs, and I’m not surprised there’s speculation around him,” Matthews told FARPost.

SUNDOWNS IN THE PICTURE FOR BLOM?

“But as far as SuperSport United is concerned, I don’t think we can match any offer that Chiefs may give Njabulo.”

Matthews suggests that Mamelodi Sundowns are also in the picture for the versatile Bafana Bafana star.

“You cannot go to a gunfight with a pocket knife, you know. So I can go fight Chiefs, Sundowns and Pirates on their players in terms of money.”

“So why would I pick a fight which I cannot win? He is a big league player and needs to earn big money, which his agent wants him to earn.”

“We will not entertain it because, realistically, it is very unlucky to afford him. I can never match the big three in terms of salaries; hence, players coming to our club must know that take pay cuts.”
With domestic football on break, Blom’s future could be decided before Christmas.

Chiefs’ football manager Bobby Motaung recently told SABC radio station Ukhozi FM that the club were not stressing about the speculation around their academy product.

He said they had started working on a new deal for the player.  Amakhosi coach Arthur Zwane has reiterated that Blom, whom he coached in the club’s youth structures, is still part of his plans.
