Owen Ga Gama describes Sekhukhune as ‘future team in SA’

Newly appointed Sekhukhune United co-coach Owen Da Gama is impressed with the club’s professionalism, which is relatively new in the Premiership.

Sekhukhune are in their maiden season in South Africa’s topflight and had a bright start as they were among the top five teams in the first half of the campaign.

However, in their last five league matches, Babina Noko are without a win and have dropped to 10th place on the log standings with 30 points. They are 12 points above bottom-placed Baroka and 10 points above 15th-placed Swallows in the relegation zone with five games remaining.

“I am so pleased and happy to be part of the future team in South Africa,” said Ga Gama.

“This team is going to go far; the management is very professional, the supporting staff, everything in this team is up to scratch.”

The club roped in the Da Gama, a former Bafana Bafana assistant coach, to work with coach MacDonald Makhubedu in the last few matches. The aim is to ensure Sekhukhune avoid the axe and rediscovers its winning formula to finish in the top eight.

“I was asked to give an input, and I said no, everything seems perfect for this team to go very far, yes we can add here and there, but I am very excited to be part of this team,” added Ga Gama.

“I have to get into the heads of the players; I need to understand where they are, what are their ambitions, where they want to go and what they want to achieve.

“And by understanding how a player thinks, you can start motivating him in the direction he wants to go. That will help us maximise their talent at this great team.”

Sekhukhune will meet Golden Arrows at Princess Magogo Stadium in Durban on Saturday at 15:00.
