Polokwane City top goalscorer explains surname change

Polokwane City longest serving player has made a crucial decision that will see his name changed from the 2022/23 season.

Since making his professional debut in 2012, Rise and Shine forward has been known as Puleng Tlolane.

It turns out the 31-year-old has been using his mother’s surname but now wants to be referred to with his father’s surname.

Tlolane is the all-time top goal scorer at the Limpopo club, with over 58 goals in the 10 seasons he has spent at the club.

As of next season, he will now be known as Puleng Marema.

“It’s obvious my mom and dad had a white wedding, so obviously I had to change. The Tlolane surname is from my mother’s side, and Marema is my father’s surname,” he explains to FARPost.

“Tlolane family has been proud of me, and I’ll forever be grateful. I am who I am because of this surname, and again I want to thank Polokwane City boss Mr Johnny Mogaladi for making this happen.

“He has been worried as to why I don’t change the surname because he’s the one that made sure that my father and mother get a proper wedding. So, the only way to repay him is to change my surname, and I hope Tlolane’s family will understand,” said Tlolane.

“But I don’t mind if people call me Tlolane/Marema because I feel both surnames are more important than me. It’s for my benefit, and it’s good to know your roots. I am proud of my decision, and hopefully, this surname will bring glory to my happiness forever. I’ve done a lot of things using the Tlolane surname, and I pray that’s new surname will bring more happiness by at least winning the league (gaining promotion to the DStv Premiership).”
