PSL all-time top scorers: Where are they now?

The South African elite league has been home to some of the most lethal strikers in the Southern Africa region, but only five of them managed to reach the 100-goal mark.

Former Bafana Bafana striker Siyabonga Nomvethe leads the five players that left their an indelible mark in the South African football books because of their goalscoring instincts and prowess.

FARPost breaks down the five players who surpassed the 100 goal mark while also revealing where they are now.

1. SIYABONGA NOMVETHE [123 goals]

Siyabonga Nomvethe remains one of the most celebrated former footballers in South Africa, whose goalscoring prowess is arguably unmatched until this point.

In his illustrious career, Nomvethe played for the now-defunct African Wanderers, Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates, Moroka Swallows, AmaZulu and Uthongathi, where he banged an impressive 123 goals.

He mainly rose to prominence after joining Kaizer Chiefs in July 1998 from African Wanderers. For the Soweto giants, he scored 42 goals in 79 appearances.

This impressive feat attracted Italian interest, and he joined Serie A outfit Udinese in 2001.

The 45-year-old swapped the boots for suits after his brief stint with Uthongathi. He got his first coaching job at AmaZulu in 2020 as Benni McCarthy’s assistant.

However, following coaching changes at the Durban-based club, Nomvethe was been redeployed to the club’s youth structures.

2. DANIEL MUDAU [110 goals]

Daniel Mudau is a revered figure at Mamelodi Sundowns as he standouts as Sundowns’ all-time top goal scorer.

Mudau joined Sundowns in 1992 from Ratanang Maholosiane. A number of lethal strikers joined the club after his retirement but they still failed to break his record. 

At the moment, Mambush [54] is serving as a club [Sundowns] ambassador responsible for scouting and youth identification.

3. MABHUTHI KHENYEZA [110 goals]

The self-styled Mabhuti Khenyeza is mainly remembered for the record he holds.

He still holds the record for the fastest Soweto derby goal which he scored in 2007 when Kaizer Chiefs drew 2-2 against Orlando Pirates.

Khenyeza hung up his boots after scoring 110 goals. He swiftly moved into coaching, starting off at TS Galaxy then in the National First Division, Motsepe Foundation Championship.

At the moment Khenyeza co-coaches Golden Arrows with Vusumuzi Vilakazi.

4. MANUEL BUCUANE [107 goals]

Mozambique’s Manuel Bucuane remains one of the finest imports to grace the PSL.

‘Tico-Tico’ as he is affectionately known scored 106 goals in his illustrious career in South Africa.

After breaking through from Desportivo de Maputo, he played for clubs that include Jomo Cosmos, Maritzburg United, SuperSport and Orlando Pirates.

Bucuane is heavily involved in football development in Mozambique. Tico Tico is also deeply engaged in empowering budding coaches and footballers through two football academies which he owns.

In 2019 he was one of the candidates that competed in the Mozambique Football Federation presidential election.

5. COLLINS MBESUMA [103 goals]

Collins Mbesuma remains one of the most cherished former Kaizer Chiefs gunslingers.

‘Ntofontofo’ left an indelible mark at the Soweto giants when he bagged 27 goals in 33 outings.

Mbesuma is the record holder for scoring the most goals in a single season for the Naturena side. 

He notched a combined 103 goals for the clubs he played for in PSL.

At the moment, Mbesuma is involved in charity work while running his academy. The Collins Mbesuma Academy which he launched in 2020.

The academy is in his native home, Zambia and South Africa. He hopes to carve out top players for Chipolopolo.
