Rulani Mokwena reacts to shock defeat to TS Galaxy

Following a 1-0 shock defeat to TS Galaxy on Tuesday evening at home, Mamelodi Sundowns co-coach Rulani Mokwena has predicted a tough season ahead of them, openly saying, “it’s going to be a very long season”.

Masandawana were labelled match favourites ahead of the encounter. They have won all their previous four league encounters against The Rockets. Now with defeat, the 100% win record has been crashed.

Lefa Hlongwane scored the only goal of the match in the 34th minute to put the visitors ahead. A strike which proved to be enough for massive three points for the underdogs.

“It’s going to be a very long season. You’ve got to win matches. We are in the sport of winning matches. As coaches, our job is to win matches,” Mokwena told the media.

“Our performance was not good. We had too many players that were struggling with the touch and intensity of the game. It didn’t work out [the way we had planned it]. We could have created more chances and scored goals.”

The former Orlando Pirates coach took one for the team, taking the full blame for the result they didn’t see coming.

“It’s our responsibility [as coaches] that the team is prepared. When the team is not prepared, and we don’t have enough hunger, then we don’t have enough aggression. We have to look at our preparation, come back and be better prepared because we have a big game on Saturday.”

The defeat leaves the reigning DStv Premiership champions with three points out of a possible six. They host their rivals Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday at Loftus Versfeld, aiming to get back to winning ways. The last time the two teams met back in May it ended in a one-all draw. Kickoff is at 15:00.

Chiefs displayed some brilliant football against Maritzburg, as they won 3-0 on Tuesday and will be looking to upset the defending champions.
