Stellies, Royal AM share the spoils

Stellenbosch FC and Royal AM played out to a 2-all draw in the Dstv Premiership encounter at Danie Craven Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Stellies kicked off and worked themselves downfield early on, piling pressure on visitors – searching for an opener.

But, all of these were dealt with by the unfazed AM, who eventually broke the deadlock in the 14th minute of the contest with a goal from Mxolisi Macuphu.

At the other end, the home side would have levelled matters in the 25th minute when Junior Mendieta’s penalty got saved by Patrick Nyame.

Doing well to regroup, Thwihli Thwahla dominated most of the first half.

The showpiece went into the interval with the hosts trailing behind by 1-0.

Despite both sides enjoying periodic possession, there were no clear chances in the opening stages of the second stanza.

It quickly changed though as Steve Barker’s side found an equaliser in the 63rd minute through Judas Moseamedi, who came on as a second half substitute.

John Maduka’s troops regained their momentum but sat back a little bit.

In the 84th minute, Tebogo Potsane added to the scoreline to put the KwaZulu-Natal outfit in front.

Just two minutes after the restart, Zitha Kwinika was sent off to take an early shower after receiving a red card.

With the AM happy to keep the hosts at arm’s length, things took a U-turn when Moseamedi completed his brace in the dying minutes of the game.

Stellies may have scored again with the visitors having left themselves exposed on the break, but, in the end, both teams settled for a draw after an eventful 90 minutes.
