Super-fan Ngcobo concerned over R500 testing fee

As fans get ready to return to the stadium, super fan Thulani Ngcobo has raised concerns over the requirement to either vaccinate or test for Covid-19 to attend games, writes Otis Ntshangase.

The PSL on Monday announced fans would be returning to the stadium, adding that a negative Covid test or vaccination certificate were pre-requisites.

Ngcobo, who holds a record for attending the most matches at the 2010 FIFA World Cup, feels that for fans that are yet to vaccinate, the R500 may be a little steep.

“I’m so happy about our return to stadiums. However, I’m so disappointed as we [football fans] are required to get tested before every match,” Ngcobo told FARPost.

“Testing for Covid-19 is expensive because one must spend at least R500.00. I’m afraid many soccer fans will miss out.”

Nonetheless, the former MTN8 ambassador believes the development is a step in the right direction. The PSL has earmarked the Nedbank quarterfinal matches of 8 and 9 April as the first matches open to spectators.

“I’m happy to go back to the stadiums to support our teams and players from the stands, though I feel this came late,” said Ngcobo.

“I think our presence in the stands will motivate the players to up their game and play for the badge, especially my team Kaizer Chiefs,” he added.

The die-hard Amakhosi fan is looking forward to the match against SuperSport United at FNB Stadium on April 16, as he will be in the stands backing his team.
