‘Sweswe finished all the socks with his big calves’: Ex-Kaizer Chiefs duo
Two of Thomas Sweswe’s former Kaizer Chiefs teammates have revealed how he left all the team’s training socks too loose to be worn by anyone else because his calves were too big.
Sweswe’s compatriot and childhood friend, Tinashe Nengomasha, made the sensational revelation that the club was forced to allocate him a separate pair of socks.
FINISHED THE SOCKS AT KAIZER CHIEFS
“He finished all the socks at Chiefs because of his big calves. Our socks were rotated, so after Thomas [Sweswe] had worn several of them, they were not fitting,” Nengomasha told FARPost.
“We then discovered that whenever Thomas wears the socks, they become too big for anyone else because of his big calves. They ended up allocating him his own socks.”
Even former Bafana Bafana superstar Siphiwe Tshabalala agrees with Nengomasha’s sentiments.
“He finished all the socks at Chiefs because of his big calves. Our socks were rotated, so after Thomas had worn them, they were not fitting,” he said.
Sweswe joined Amakhosi in July 2009 from Zimbabwean giants Dynamos, where he had become a household name.
In his Kaizer Chiefs stint that lasted until 2012, the retired defender shared the dressing room with some of South Africa’s finest players, among them Tshabalala and Reneilwe “Yeye” Letsholonyane.
SAFEGUARDING THE WELFARE OF FOOTBALLERS
He also played with his compatriot Nengomasha before crossing floors to join Bidvest Wits in July 2012 where he spent two years.
The 41-year-old has, however, become passionate about safeguarding the welfare of soccer stars.
He has since established himself well in Zimbabwe as the secretary-general of the Footballers Union of Zimbabwe [FUZ], which aims to defend and advance the interests of footballers in the country.
“I don’t want to see Khama Billiat repeat the same mistakes we made,” Sweswe told FARPost.
