Tinkler confident City will bounce back

Cape Town City head coach Eric Tinkler has lauded his players’ effort and believes they will start winning games soon.

The Citizens opened their DStv Premiership campaign with a loss against the defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns before suffering a shock defeat against Swallows FC on Tuesday at Dobsonville Stadium in a five-goal thriller.

Despite failing to collect a single point so far this season, the former Orlando Pirates tactician believes that goals will come, and they’ll start winning matches.

“I felt for the boys because they didn’t deserve what they got today; for me assessing the game, we started extremely well; first 25 minutes, we dominated. I think we created many chances, we created three in the two minutes of the game, and we should have scored. One cross in the box for them and a fantastic header for [Waseem] Isaacs, and you find yourself 1-nil down.

“However, the boys kept working, we still created more chances, we had more shots and another fantastic strike from outside the box, and we found ourselves 2-nil down. Still, my team kept going, performing, doing exactly what we had planned, our structure looked like what it was supposed to be, and our combination play was extremely good,” the 52-year-old told the media.
The Cape Town based-side was one of the best teams in the league last season, which saw them finish as runners-up behind Masandawana. City won 12 games, drew 13 and lost only on five occasions.

Having qualified for the CAF Champions league competition, the John Comitis-owned club faces a tough challenge: taxing on mental strength, playing personnel and tactical ability.

Cape Town City will be looking to return to winning ways when they face AmaZulu FC at Moses Mabhida stadium on Saturday. Kick-off is at 20:00.

Meanwhile, Bafana Bafana left-back Terrence Mashego looks set to return to action after recovering from a knee injury that forced him out of the AFCON qualifier against Morocco.
