Top five new signings who impressed in the first round

The 2022/23 DStv Premiership season kickoff this past weekend, and FARPost has picked the top five new signings who had great debuts and performed well for their new clubs.

As always, it was a goals galore weekend, producing 10 goals across all matches. Many new signings made their debut for their respective clubs and performed well.

Ronwen Williams

The Bafana Bafana skipper was preferred in goal for reigning champions Mamelodi Sundowns when they faced a tricky Cape Town City on Friday evening. The experienced shot-stopper had a superb performance on his debut between the sticks keeping a clean sheet. The former SuperSport United goalie made a number of good saves to ensure that the attacking-minded Citizens were denied their first goal of the new campaign.

“In Ronwen, the decision was to try and induct him as quickly as possible. The road ahead is a little bit rough, and the competition in that space is still going to be rough, but it’s always better when he’s going to be playing at the back of performance against Cape Town City because already he has played a very intense and very high profile game. The save that he pulled will maybe also help him to calm his nerves a little bit,” Downs co-coach Manqoba Mngqithi told the media.

Nkosilathi Sibisi

The former Golden Arrows defender started his stint with Orlando Pirates on a great note. The 26-year-old was solid at the back for the Soweto giants helping the team to keep a clean sheet. For his great performance on his debut, Sibisi was awarded the Man of the Match award, guiding the Bucs to their first victory.

Eva Nga

The Cameroonian scored the match’s only goal as the Buccaneers defeated crosstown rivals Swallows FC 1-0 on Saturday. The 29-year-old’s strike ensured that the Sea Robbers positively started the new campaign in winning ways.

Bongani Sam

The Orlando Pirates loanee started life at Maritzburg United on a positive note after finding the back of the net against a new-look Sekhukhune United. The 25-year-old’s strike salvaged a point for his side with five minutes left on the clock.

Tshegofatso Mabasa

Orlando Pirates striker Tshegofatso Mabasa who is on loan to Sekhukhune United, had a great debut, scoring in his first match. The 25-year-old found the back of the net as early as 15 minutes to open his scoring account for Babina Noko after combining well with Linda Mntambo, who he played with at the Buccaneers last season.
