Pretoria Callies snatch Bafana prospect

Motsepe Foundation Championship side Pretoria Callies have acquired the services of Bafana Bafana prospect midfielder Sifiso Mbidana.

Mbidana joins the South African football second-tier outfit from Bizana Pondo Chiefs, who are participating in the Eastern Cape ABC Motsepe League.

Pondo Chiefs failed to return to the National First Division last season, finishing third in Stream A of their provincial ABC League with 27 points after 16 outings.

The teenage sensation was part of Helman Mkhalele’s youthful Bafana squad in the 2022 COSAFA Cup tournament.

“Bizana Pondo Chiefs FC is pleased to announce that Sifiso Mbidana has joined Pretoria Callies FC on mutual agreement with the team,” read the Bizana-based side’s statement.

Meanwhile, the club chairman Nathi Mqokiyana added: “The club would like to thank Sifiso for his selfless contribution and wish him all the best in his future career.”

When the rising star received a call from the South African senior national team last month, the club described it as something that would inspire a lot of youngsters to believe that, with dedication and hard work, the dream of representing the national team is possible, regardless of age or background.

The youngster will be expected to add value to coach Kwanele Kopo’s midfield options, given his excellent pace and got an eye for goals.

The Motsepe Foundation Championship is expected to start on Friday, 2 September, until Saturday, 14 May 2022.

Callies will play their first league match on Saturday, 3 September, against Cape Town Spurs at Lucas Moripe Stadium.

Up the Romans will be hoping not to fight for the relegation zone in the upcoming season and have set sights on challenging for promotion to the DStv Premiership.

Last season, the side finished in the 12th position with 35 points, six points clear from relegated TS Sporting and Jomo Cosmos.
