Mkhalele set to coach Bafana at Cosafa

A Bafana Bafana assistant coach is set to take charge of the national team at the upcoming Cosafa Cup.

Despite numerous reports suggesting that under 23 coach David Notoane will be coaching South Africa at the tournament, a source inside the South African Football Association (Safa) has confirmed that it will be Helman Mkhalele who will be taking charge of the team.

“The decision that has been taken is that coach Helman must coach the team at the Cosafa, so he will be the coach next month,” the source told FARPost.

The reasons for the change are unclear, but the association had initially decided that the annual event will be used by Notoane to start preparations for the 2024 Olympic games in Paris.

Mkhalele is expected to announce his final 23-man squad on Thursday, although the team will only travel to Durban on the 10th of July.

Bafana will begin their title defence on the 13th of July when they tackle Mozambique in the quarter-final phase of the competition.
