Modiba’s favourite position revealed

Mamelodi Sundowns star Aubrey Modiba is, no doubt, a versatile player! Since his move to Chloorkop from SuperSport United in 2020, he has featured in different positions and in recent weeks, he has shone like a beacon.

Of course, like many Downs players, the 27-year-old has had to be patient for game time. His former teammate at SuperSport, Thato Mokeke, has watched him flourish in an unfamiliar position.

“I played with him at SuperSport, and he does not prefer playing left-back; he loves playing as a left-winger or as a number 10 when you play two 10s. But, of course, he has been developed to play multiple positions, and by just looking at him play, you can see he understands what is required of him,” said the Cape Town City player.

‘The Postman’ has delivered two goals and an assist in 27 DStv Premiership matches, and Rulani Mokwena has explained how he functions in the Downs set-up. “When we are in position, he does not have a fixed position; his position is to find space between the line. When we are out of position, he covers areas that are covered by central midfielders,” explained Mokwena.

He has been nominated for the Nedbank Cup Player of the tournament after scoring a goal in three matches. Downs co-coach Manqoba Mngqithi has praised his performances in the competition.

“You look at Aubrey in the Nedbank Cup matches; he has done very well. No wonder he’s been selected amongst the nominees. The fact that he’s coming from the Ke Yona team may also make him a very interesting nominee within the group because he has come a long way with Nedbank, and I think that is also considered in that space. So we are delighted and encouraged that our boys are in that space, and we are also confident that they’ve got what it takes to win it.”
