Mwaruwari set for new coaching job

Former Jomo Cosmos marksman Benjani Mwaruwari is set to be announced coach for Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League side Ngezi Platinum.

The club has been searching for a replacement for Rodwell Dhlakama, who left earlier this month, and is set to announce their new man early next week.

A club source confirmed to FARPost that the former Manchester City forward was a frontrunner for the position. Zambian coach Kevin Kaindu, who has previously coached Highlanders in Bulawayo, was also considered.

“As things stand, Benjani should be coming to take over as head coach. Just a few modalities, and we have a deal, but all is on track,” the source said.

Mwaruwari, who holds a Uefa A License, was at French side AJ Auxerre earlier this month doing his attachment there.

‘The Undertaker’ had a stint with the club during his playing days. Should he land the Ngezi job, it will be his first big break as a coach.

Mwaruwari was appointed Zimbabwe Warriors assistant coach last year but vacated the post after two matches when Croatian coach Zdravko Logarušić was fired following a string of poor results.

He was reappointed ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations but could not travel with the team to Cameroon. He worked for SuperSport as an analyst during the tournament.

In an exclusive interview, the 43-year-old, who retired from professional football in 2014, recently told FARPost that he was planning to take up coaching seriously, following in the footsteps of former players like South African legend Benni McCarthy.

Meanwhile, reports in Zimbabwe also suggest former Dynamos and Shabanie Mine coach Luke Masomere applied for the job.
