Pitso on Fifa award snub: We are from the wrong continent

Pitso Mosimane has enjoyed a dream start at Al Ahly, lifting five trophies since joining the African giants in 2020. But he was overlooked for the Fifa Best Men’s Coach.

All the finalists for the award were once again European coaches. Antonio Conte, Hansi Flick, Lionel Scaloni, Diego Simeone, Thomas Tuchel [winner], Pep Guardiola and Robeto Mancini.

Despite clinching back-to-back Caf Champions League titles and two consecutive Caf Super Cups, the Egyptian Cup and a bronze medal at the Fifa World Cup, Mosimane was not considered among the best coaches in the world.

“Unfortunately, we are from the wrong continent. I have given up on Europe,” said Mosimane.

“If Sadio Mane, Mohammed Salah, and so on can win the Uefa Champions League, Premier League and Fifa Club World Cup and still not win any world or European awards, who are we? Samuel Etoo and Raheem Sterling objected and voiced out, but who cares?”

The former Mamelodi Sundowns coach added: “It is not only Africa [that is overlooked]. It is as though, it does not mean as much when you win in the competitions that do not generate the most money, that do not have the biggest audiences.”
