Swallows set for playoffs after 2-2 stalemate with Chiefs

Swallows FC are now set for the relegation/promotional playoffs after playing a 2-2 draw against Kaizer Chiefs, thanks to two second-half penalties in a DStv Premiership encounter played at the FNB Stadium on Saturday.

The Birds went into the match needing a positive result and would have panicked after their former defender Njabulo Ngcobo scored in the 20th minute to give Amakhosi the lead.

Swallows, who were in 15th place going into the game – level on points with bottom-placed Baroka on 25 points – created a few scoring chances but just could not convert in the first half.

Anyone who watched the last 25 minutes of the first half would have concluded they were a doomed team as they came close to scoring a few times.

However, in the second half, they dominated play and won two successive penalties. Dillon Solomons converted both – sending Bruce Bvuma the wrong way for the first in the 63rd minute. For the second, which came six minutes later, he changed direction, slotting it into the bottom right corner.

Although Bvuma dived in the right direction, he could not stop the spot-kick. When they looked all set for a win, Bernard Parker levelled terms in the 84th minute with a well struck free-kick.

Baroka’s 1-0 loss to Maritzburg United sends them to the GladAfrica Championship as they finish 16th in the DStv Premiership table.
