CT City sign Wayde Lekay

FARPost can reveal that Cape Town City have snapped up Wayde Lekay after parting ways with TS Galaxy recently.

Lakay was released by Galaxy last month and had trials with Royal AM and Kaizer Chiefs. However, none of the two DStv Premiership teams signed him.

A club official confirmed that he had joined the club as they sought to add a striker to their squad. “He’s just joined us and should be unveiled soon,” the official said. Lekay spent the last two seasons with The Rockets after joining them from second-tier side Steenberg United.

The 25-year-old’s scoring record at the Mpumalanga side was not impressive at all. According to transfermkt stats, he managed eight goals in 45 games in all competitions. City have completed some shrewd transfer business during the current window, bringing in highly-rated Gambia international Kajally Drammeh.

Jordan Bender also joined the Citizens from US outfit Orlando City while Marc van Heerden made a switch from city rivals Stellenbosch. Stellies offloaded the former Orlando Pirates left-back at the end of last season.

They also have Lebogang Manyama waiting in the wings. Eric Tinkler recently told the media that the former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder was recovering from a knee injury.

Tinkler added that a decision would be made once he recovered. However, indications are that there is an agreement between the two parties.

The 31-year-old was deemed surplus to requirements by Chiefs alongside a few other senior players, including Bernard Parker, Dumisani Zuma, Samir Nurkovic, Lazarous Kambole, Daniel Cardoso, Leonardo Castro, Daniel Akpeyi, Kearyn Baccus and Anthony Agay.

He played some of his best football with City, being crowned player of the season in the 2016/17 season. Following that stellar season, he made a switch to Turkish side Konyaspor, a stint that was unsuccessful. He then spent four years at Chiefs.

Tinkler’s City have poorly started this season, losing all three games to Mamelodi Sundowns, Swallows and AmaZulu.
