The seventh edition of the Veli Mothwa Foundation Top 16 soccer Tournament came to an end on Monday, 27 December at Zebediela Ga-Ntamatise Sports Ground in Limpopo.

The Bafana Bafana and AmaZulu goalkeeper, Mothwa, established the tournament at his home village back in 2014.

It has since grown to be one of the December festive events that football fans around that area look forward to attending.

The event has since attracted sponsors such as Hollywoodbets, MTN and Score Energy Drink.

“I want to thank the community of Zebediela for coming out in numbers to support the tournament and all the teams that were participating,” Mothwa told FARPost.

“When I started in 2014 everything was so low, I couldn’t get sponsors because some of the people that we approached couldn’t see the vision that we had but I said to myself I don’t want to give up on this because the community of ZB is not well known because you can count less than 10 players who play professional football (from the area).

“When you check tournaments are not being held but ZB has quality players who play quality football so I wanted to give an opportunity to the young ones to have an opportunity to be identified to play professional football through this tournament. One day they can say Veli gave us an opportunity to show case our talent,” he said.

“Going forward I am looking for more sponsors to pour something also, so we can award more than the R50 000 we are giving today. Since I started, I have never got this support but today I am 100% happy with what I have got and I am extremely happy.”

Magatle Arsenal were crowned the 2021 Champions after beating Mahwibitswane FC on penalties in the Final. They walked away with R50 000 and a brand new soccer kit.
