‘We lacked leadership’ – Tembo on Nedbank defeat

SuperSport United coach Kaitano Tembo believes the lack of experience, specifically in defence, contributed to Friday’s shock defeat in the Nedbank Cup quarterfinals by Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila.

United were eliminated from the Nedbank Cup after a 3-2 loss to TTM at Thohoyandou Stadium. The defeat also stretched Matsatsantsa’s winless streak to five matches, with three losses and two draws.

“It’s lack of leadership, especially at the heart of the defence,” said Tembo after the match.

“We didn’t show a little bit of leadership and I think this is one game we should have done better but you can see when you have 90% of your team who are young players it becomes a little bit difficult.

“They couldn’t deal with (Rhulani) Manzini’s power as well as Rendani (Ndou) hence the long balls to the two strikers gave us a little bit of a problem,” he said.

“Look we want to win but at the same time, we have to see where the team is in terms of the playing personnel. Look at it on the bench there we have young players but that’s how it is.”
