Ex-Banyana star to conduct trials in Mamelodi
Former Banyana Banyana star Khabo Zitha will hold trials next weekend as she seeks to identify new talent in Mamelodi.
The trials will take place at the Central Grounds in Mamelodi on Saturday 15 January from 8am and are open to all female players.
Zitha grew up in Mamelodi, a township located in the north-eastern outskirts of Pretoria, and started her career at Mamelodi Sundowns playing with boys. At the height of her career, between 1994 to 2006, she played for the national team alongside top talents like Banyana coach Desiree Ellis and former goal poacher Portia Modise.
During her playing days, women’s football was still in its infancy stage and she believes now is the time to create opportunities for talented young girls in the township.
“I feel there’s a lot of girls with talent in the township and not all of them get the opportunity to play for the already established clubs. It’s my desire to give them the opportunity,” Zitha told FARPost.
The former national team midfielder has previously coached Orlando Pirates’ development side and the Department of Correctional Services’ team. She wants to put the experience she has garnered to use.
“I think there’s a lot upcoming players can learn and I’m hoping to impart the knowledge I’ve acquired over the years,” she said.
Zitha is confident she can build a team that will compete and rise through the leagues over the next couple of years.
