Senegal edge 9-man Cape Verde to reach Afcon last 8

Senegal have reached the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations quarterfinals after their 2-0 win over Cape Verde at Kouekong Stadium on Tuesday evening.

‘The Lions of Teranga’ started the first half with great intensity, and almost took the lead two minutes into the contest.

Things weren’t slowing down, with the game being played almost exclusively in Cape Verde’s half.

In the 21st minute of the showpiece, Patrick Andrade was shown a red card after a reckless tackle, leaving the ‘Blue Sharks’ one man short.

As the half progressed, Cape Verde responded well to Senegal’s early pressure, with the side creating better chances but failing to convert them.

The game went into the half-time break goalless.

Both sides began the second period at a fast pace, with more chances created.

Just seven minutes into the second stanza, goalkeeper Josimar Dias, known as Vozinha became the second player to receive a red card for Cape Verde.

Things went from bad to worse for Bubista’s side when Sadio Mane gave Senegal a lead in the 63rd minute.

Senegal continued to threaten, seeking the second goal of the day.

In the stoppage time, Bamba Dieng added to the scoreline making it 2-0 in favour of Senegal.

If anything, Cape Verde were perhaps lucky to finish the game only 2-0 down, given the fact that they played the majority of the second period with nine men.
