FA confirms England will not play Russia after invasion of Ukraine

The Football Association (FA) has confirmed that England will not play international matches against Russia at any level in the ‘foreseeable future’ due to the country’s ongoing conflict with Ukraine.

The FA follows the lead of Poland, Sweden, and the Czech Republic, who have said they will not take part in a Fifa World Cup play-off against Russia as the world of football unites in its criticism of Russia’s actions.

The invasion began in late February, escalating the Russo-Ukrainian War, which started in 2014.

“Out of solidarity with Ukraine and to wholeheartedly condemn the atrocities being committed by the Russian leadership. We won’t play against Russia in any international fixtures for the foreseeable future. This includes any potential match at any level of senior, age group or para football,” said the FA in a statement.

Fifa have said Russia could play as an ‘RFU’ team without their flag or anthem, but they may be banned from World Cup qualification regardless.
