KwaZulu-Natal ABC Motsepe League outfit Newcastle All Stars have confirmed the passing of their skipper and goalkeeper Mpilonhle Khanyezi.
‘Bhova’, as he’s popularly known within the football cycle was shot in the early hours of Sunday, 20 March 2022.
Khanyezi has been instrumental for Newcastle in the 2021/22 season and led the club with aplomb.
The side finished the season in fourth place in Stream B of the provincial ABC League with 32 points.
“It is with great sadness to announce the untimely passing of our goalkeeper and the captain of the team Mpilonhle ‘Bhova’ Khanyezi in a shooting incident early hours of Sunday 20th March 2022,” read the statement.
“Khanyezi’s painful death is a serious blow to our team as he was a pillar of our defence and had featured prominently in our successful maiden season which saw the team reaching the final of Nedbank Cup provincial last 32 playoffs and finishing 4th position in the ABC Motsepe Stream B.
“We wish to pass our heartfelt condolences to the Khanyezi family, Bhova’s teammates and Newcastle All Stars supporters.
“The Management is in contact with his family and will update our supporters about the details of the funeral service.
