UWC Ladies beef up squad with 11 new signings
The University of Western Cape (UWC Ladies) made a strong statement of intent by bolstering their squad for the new Hollywoodbets Super League with 11 new signings.
The signings include Banyana Banyana players in Ntombifikile Ndlovu, a striker from Sunflower and left-winger Lonathemba Mhlongo from Durban Ladies.
Philisa Mjambane, who has featured for Banyana as a striker, also joins UWC Ladies from Thunderbirds Ladies. At the same time, Basetsana (SA women’s U20) goalkeeper Robyn Coetzee moves to the cape after a stint with Wits Ladies.
Oyisa Marhasi, a prolific striker at youth level (Bantwana U17), arrives in the Western Cape from Eluhewini Ladies.
The rest of the new UWC Ladies players are Katlego Mabuza (Midfielder), Keylon Pietersen (full back), Sihle Dlamini (goalkeeper), Lindokuhle Gladile (Right back), Akholiwe Matsotsi (Midfielder), Unathi Simanyile (Centre back).
“This is our show of intention that we are not just going to compete this year, we are going to win the Super League,” said UWC Sport Director Mandla Gagayi.
Last season, the university side finished in third place, 20 points behind champions Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies.
“We competed last season and learned a few lessons, so we will win the league this campaign so that we can compete at Caf level. We have one team that has done so successfully [Sundowns Ladies], we want to be the next team,” he added.
UWC Ladies also confirmed Leah Sweetness Masango as the new assistant coach to work with head coach Thinasonke Mbuli.
