2021/22 Scudetto: An unpredictable three-horse race
The 2021-2022 Italian Serie A Championship is on the knives edge. This season’s Scudetto is left with 7-8 matches before completion, and the usual protagonists are already in pursuit. AC Milan, Inter Milan and Napoli are all positioned in a three-horse for the biggest prize in Italian club football.
FARPost Technical Study Group (TSG) looks at the three matches involving all the teams in this season’s title race.
- AC Milan v Genoa
The leaders, AC Milan welcomes Genoa at the San Siro. Milan have accumulated 68 points from 32 matches. They have scored a total 56 goals and conceded 29, with a goal difference of 27.
Having played a game more than Inter, nothing more than the full three points will be required. They have won 20 games in this campaign to their credit and should dispose second from bottom Genoa with relative ease.
- Spezia v Inter Milan
Milan’s cross-town rivals, Inter Milan are away at the Stadio Alberto Picco against Spezia. The ‘Nerazurri’ will enter this battle at the back of a comfortable (2-0) over Verona. In this game, Inter dominated from start to finish and should have scored aplenty.
Inter is better placed in this race among the three contenders (Milan and Napoli). Their 2 points adrift from Milan with a game in hand. Also, they have scored 65 goals and conceded (24) less than both their fellow chasers. With Spezia perched in the lower half of the table (33 points) and 11 points above the drop zone, this match will be very dangerous for Inter. Expect a battling performance from Inter, and this one can go either way.
- Napoli v Roma
At the San Paolo, Naples, the home team Napoli will be taking on visitors Roma. Matches between these two teams always brings excitement and uncertainty. Napoli are placed third and on equal points with Inter and 2 points adrift of the leaders Milan. They have scored 58 goals and conceded 32 in their 32 matches played.
Napoli will host Roma on the back of a demoralising loss against (1-2) Fiorentina. Their coach, Luciano Spalletti, will have to juggle his tactical approach. Dries Mertens started on the bench and scored against Fiorentina and his partnership with Victor Osimhen. The TSG anticipate an epic match with goals but tilting towards a draw.
