Vela Khumalo wants to produce world-class players
Kaizer Chiefs reserves coach Vela Khumalo says the drive for development coaches must be to produce players that will compete in Europe.
Khumalo’s prodigy at Chiefs, Mduduzi Shabalala, jetted off to Belgium last week for trials with second-tier outfit KVC Westerlo. His coach believes his talent and skills will set him apart as he seeks to breakthrough in Europe.
The youngster has been an important player for the Young Amakhosi this season, with fans rewarding him with a dance in the DStv Compact Cup earlier this year.
“I’m sure Mdu [Shabalala] won’t come back to South Africa. I don’t know if they will take him in Belgium or Spain, but they will be intrigued by his talent,” said Khumalo.
“The way he is and his talent are what makes him a special player. He’s not only a talented footballer, but he’s got the determination.”
Khumalo, who has coached the youth national teams, described the midfielder as a fighter and a hardworking boy.
“I did not want to play him when we played Chippa, but he begged me to say he wanted to play for the last time; that’s the kind of player he is. He always wants to work,” he added.
Khumalo also believes goalkeeper Bontle Molefe will also be jetting off to Belgium for trials with First Division A outfit Royal Antwerp FC has what it takes to play abroad.
“I wish them luck, him and Bontle Molefe. That’s our job at Chiefs. Apart from trying to collect points every weekend, we need to produce players who can compete in Europe. Their success will open doors for other Chiefs players abroad. On top of that, their departure will open doors for others within the team to work hard so that they can be like Shabalala and Bontle.”
