Ex-coaches thrilled at Athenkosi Mcaba’s meteoric rise
Jealous Down FC chairman Tshepo Phatlane and coach Richard Makhubu knew Stellenbosch defender Athenkosi Mcaba was a player with potential the first time they laid eyes on him. But they’re both quick to admit they’ve been amazed by the young defender’s meteoric rise to first-team football.
Makhubu – who coached Mcaba from the age of seven – played a key role in setting the 20-year-old on the path to the remarkable success he is now achieving. After getting a Bafana Bafana call-up in March, he believes the youth international has a bright future in the game.
“We’ve had good players in the past. He [Mcaba] was also good, I knew he would make it one day and become a top player, but I didn’t think so soon. His dedication did him well,” Makhubu told FARPost. Through hard work and dedication, he was signed by Bidvest Wits, and after the club was sold, he signed for DStv Premiership outfit Stellenbosch FC.
Makhubu has tipped his prodigy to end up playing in Europe. “I see him play in Europe. He needs to continue working hard. His qualities make it easier for him to play; he has age on his side, tactical discipline, and a leader on the field and can use both feet.”
The club chairman believes the Stellies defender could be Bafana Bafana’s stalwart in the next couple of years. Mcaba made his Bafana debut against Guinea in a friendly match last month. “I celebrated seeing him [Mcaba] play for the national team; we were excited.
“He is there to stay in the national team if he keeps getting chances and call-ups. He will be successful; he needs to keep fit, then his career will reach his desired level,” Phatlane added. In the 2021/22 season, Mcaba has made 14 appearances for the Cape Town side in all competitions.
