Downs sink Royal AM to book Nedbank final spot

Mamelodi Sundowns out-fought Royal AM to book Marumo Gallants clash in the 2022 Nedbank Cup final.

Second-half goals from Aubrey Modiba and Pavol Safranko saw Bafana Ba Style overcome Thwihli Thwahla 2-1 in the competition’s semi-final tie at Chatsworth Stadium on Saturday night.

The showpiece got off to a cagey start, as both sides struggled to find any real momentum.

As the half progressed, chances continued to be few and far between from the two teams.

The half-time whistle blew with the scoreline still 0-0.

A sensational second stanza, saw the visitors taking a lead as Modiba scored a beautiful free kick in the 62nd minute.

However, 10 minutes after the restart, Thabo Matlaba scored a stunner to level matters.

Despite the home side scoring an equaliser, the former African champions never slowed down as they added to the scoreline through Safranko in the 75th minute of the contest.

John Maduka’s troops never recovered from that point till the final minute.

As a result, Masandawana will face Bahlabane Ba Nthwa in the tournament’s finals at Royal Bafokeng Stadium on May 28.
