Asanovic sweating over Mwepu’s fitness ahead of Afcon qualifiers

The Zambia national team could be without influential midfielder Enock Mwepu for the Ivory Coast 2023 African Cup of Nations qualifiers next month.

Chipolopolo will face host Ivory Coast and Comoros on 6 and 14 June, respectively, as they seek to qualify for next year’s finals.

Having missed the three previous Afcon editions, the Copper Bullets’ task is set to be even harder on the injury front, with Aljosa Asanovic sweating over the fitness of Mwepu.

Mwepu picked up his latest groin injury in Brighton’s 3-0 win over Wolves and subsequently missed the 4-0 thrashing of Manchester United.

Despite having an injury-ravaged season in which he has just made 17 league appearances, the Zambian has impressed Brighton.

Ahead of the qualifiers, Asanovic is understood to be keeping his fingers crossed and hoping that his prized asset will be fit in June.
