Ahly star Afsha throws weight behind Mosimane
Al Ahly midfielder Mohamed Magdy, popularly known as ‘Afsha’, says he will be ready to be deployed wherever his coach Pitso Mosimane deems necessary as the Egyptian side chases its third straight Caf Champions League title. The Red Eagles beat ES Setif of Algeria in the first leg of their semi-final tie last Saturday, and Afsha has warned that it is not over until they face Setif in their backyard.
“We managed to get a positive result in the first leg, but we still didn’t qualify. We know that the Algerian side will also try to qualify. We know our objectives, and we are concentrated on Saturday’s game. There is no need to about the objectives; we already know what we have to deliver.
“We can’t talk about the final as we still didn’t qualify. So, we have to achieve a positive result first on Saturday,” he said. He added that he would play any position required as long as he was in the Cairo giants’ dressing room. “As long as I am here, I’ll play at any position the coach wants me to play. I accept constructive criticism, and I try to do my best. I try not to focus on negative comments that aren’t logical enough,” added Afsha.
Meanwhile, Mosimane said he understood Percy Tau’s goal-scoring struggles in recent weeks and was happy he finally hit the target twice against Setif. The Bafana Bafana talisman also provided two assists as Al Ahly ran riot over 10-man Setif at the Al-Salam Stadium in Cairo. “I’ve known Percy [Tau] for 20 years, and I know how it feels like when a player doesn’t score,” Mosimane said
Mosimane was behind Tau’s goal-scoring prowess when the pair was still at Mamelodi Sundowns. The former Witbank Spurs star found his scoring boots in 2016 when he helped Masandawana win their first-ever Caf Champions league trophy and became a joint-top goalscorer alongside Rodney Ramagela with 11 goals in the 2017/18 season.
