AmaZulu’s Kunene vows to fight for his place after long lay-off

Usuthu winger Mxolisi Kunene has sent a strong message to his teammates in the attacking department, saying that he will fight to get back into the team following a long absence.

The 30-year-old, who linked up with the club at the start of the season, from another KZN outfit Maritzburg United, was unlucky at Usuthu as he sustained different long term injury setbacks (Achilles and knee injuries). That kept him on the sidelines for about two years, making only four appearances.

“It has not been easy; I’ve been out for so long. It’s almost two years now without playing. I’m happy that I’m back now, doing what I love the most. They’ve given me a chance; I’ve been waiting for this chance to come. I’m just praying I can grab this chance with both hands. I’m ready to fight for my position,” Kunene said.

“I’m happy, and I just want to thank God and the support I get from my teammates and coaching staff.”

Kunene, who is set to make his return this weekend against second-placed Cape Town City, expects a difficult encounter as both teams are aiming to finish the season in a better position. However, he is optimistic that it’s possible to get three points.

“The game against City is important to us even though we are playing away from home, but I think it’s possible to come back with maximum points,” Kunene added.

“We’re more than ready to go there and fight. It’s not going to be an easy game, but we can come back with three points. We need to go there, show some hunger and desire.”

The Capetonians and Usuthu are second and seventh on the DStv Premiership log with 48 and 40 points respectively.
