Mphahlele’s solitary goal earns Chiefs maximum points
Ramahlwe Mphahlele was the star as Kaizer Chiefs dug deep to beat Sekhukhune 1-0 in a DStv Premiership encounter played at the Emirates Airline Park Stadium in Johannesburg. Amakhosi took the lead with six minutes to halftime when Mphahlele headed a well-taken free-kick off the crossbar and into the net.
Interestingly, Mphahlele’s man-of-the-match performance came at the same venue [formerly known as Ellis Park], where he debuted in 2007 while playing for Swallows. The Soweto giants dictated terms in the first half with an impressive, dominant performance. However, for all their enthusiasm, Chiefs could not create too many scoring opportunities.
In the second half, they were flat, allowing Babina Noko back into the game. With the result, Chiefs kept the heat on second-placed Cape Town City and third-placed Royal AM. It took them to 46 points, level with Royal AM, who drew 2-2 with Golden Arrows. The MaMkhize-owned outfit has a game in hand.
Mathematically, Chiefs can still finish second if City, who have 49 points, lose and they win their last game against relegation-threatened Swallows.
