Gomes ‘looking forward’ to Qatar World Cup experience

South Africa’s highly rated referee Victor Gomes have been appointed to officiate at the upcoming Fifa World Cup due to take place in Qatar later this year.

Gomes is considered one of the best on the African continent, having officiated in the Africa Cup of Nations final earlier this year when Senegal got the better of Egypt 4-2 on penalties following a 0-0 draw after extra time to clinch the prestigious African title.

He will be joined by his fellow countryman, seasoned assistant referee Zakhele Siwela. The 39-year-old match official expressed his gratitude for the opportunity offered to him, and he can’t wait to do what he does the best.

“I am extremely privileged to represent our country, my family and the Association (Safa) at the biggest sporting event in the world. I am looking forward to going out there and giving it our best, myself and my team,” said Gomes.

“We will be raising the South African flag high, and we want to make our country proud.”

Meanwhile, Siwela noted that it is pleasing to see hard work and dedication paying off at the end of the day. “This is great. Gomes and I will continue working hard, and we will continue to hoist the South African flag high.”
