Usuthu beat Chiefs to Chippa defender’s signature

After a massive clear-out, Kaizer Chiefs are busy in the transfer market in an effort to bolster their squad ahead of next season.

Amakhosi announced eight exits on Wednesday, with veteran defender Daniel Cardoso, Samir Nurkovic, Lazarous Kambole, Lebohang Manyama, Daniel Akpeyi, Kearyn Baccus, Anthony Akumu Agay and Leonardo Castro all waving goodbye at Naturena.

It has since emerged that the Soweto giants were racing with AmaZulu for the signature of a Chippa United defender.

Usuthu chairman Sandile Zungu last week confirmed that Tapelo Xoki was joining Orlando Pirates. The departure of the Cape Town-born defender leaves a void at the back.

However, the club has moved swiftly to replace him with Veluyeke Zulu, pictured above, from the Chilli Boys, beating Chiefs to his signature.

In the just-ended season, Zulu made 26 appearances for the Chilli Boys, notching two goals in the DStv Premiership.

He joined the Eastern Cape club last year from Richards Bay and had a stellar season, catching the interest of Chiefs, who were eager to sign the 27-year-old.
