Khune takes step closer to becoming goalkeeper coach

Kaizer Chiefs veteran shot-stopper Itumeleng Khune has taken a step closer to a pathway into goalkeeper coaching in the future, having enrolled on the FIFA/SAFA goalkeeper coaching course.

The course is currently underway at the SAFA Technical Centre, with 25 coaches from around the country in attendance.

The 25 are Lucky Shiburi, Delisle Mbatha, Cameron Cox, Adolph Mabotja, Monde Hlatshwayo, Dominic Ramokgopa, Tshepo Makgata, David Ribeiro, Tyron Damonds, Thembalethu Moses, Rory Minaar, Itumeleng Khune, Aubrey Mothibe, Wendell Robinson, Moeneeb Josephs, Thabang Stemmer, Pernell McKop, Sean Lowu, Rowen Fernandes, Shuaib Walters, Musa Langa, Sipho Zimba, Marcus Mashil and Greg Etafia.

As Khune gradually learns the ropes of becoming goalkeeper coach, a major revelation emerged last week when Amakhosi parted ways with its goalkeeper coach Lee Baxter ahead of the 2022/23 season.

Baxter arrived at Naturena in February 2018 and worked with a number of Head Coaches and goalkeepers.

With Baxter’s role at the club vacant, Khune could take up the position to pass on all his goalkeeping teachings to better the Soweto giants’ goalkeeping department.

Khune has played 327 games for the Glamour Boys and kept 125 clean sheets across all competitions.

He also boasted 91 caps for Bafana Bafana, 17 caps for Amajita and was part of the 2016 South Africa Olympic team held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
