How Sundowns’ new Ethiopian striker fared this season

Ethiopian striker Abubeker Nassir signed for Mamelodi Sundowns and looks set to land at Chloorkop this week, FARPost can confirm.

This publication contacted several sources in Ethiopia as reports suggest that the Ethiopia Coffee forward is on his way to South Africa to start life in Gauteng.

An Ethiopian television reporter corroborated the version of EthioFooty on Tuesday.

“Yes, it is true he is joining them. He signed in January this year. He will travel to SA and join them,” the reporter tells FARPost.

Ethiopia’s authoritative website Soccerethiopia.net has reported that Nassir arrived in Addis Ababa last night and was set to depart for South Africa today, Tuesday.

“Abubeker Nassir is on his way to @Masandawana. The player will travel to South Africa tomorrow to finalise his move to the club. There is a chance today’s match was his last as an Ethiopian Coffee,” @EthioFooty tweeted on Tuesday.

Nassir, who is on a five-year contract with Coffee running up to 2025, attended trials at Sundowns earlier this year, with his Ethiopian club having confirmed through an earlier a statement.

“Nassir left for South Africa last night after being called up for talks with Ethiopian Coffee by Sundowns in the January transfer window to sign Abubakar Nassir,” Coffee said in a statement released on 25 January 2022.

Here’s how his stats look like

The 21-year-old is one of the hottest prospects in East Africa after netting 36 goals [six from the penalty spot] in 47 Premier League matches in the last two seasons for Coffee FC. 14 of those goals came this season, in which he featured in 18 games.

He was deservedly named Most Valuable Player and Young Player of the Season in the Ethiopian League.

Two weeks ago, Nassir scored when Ethiopia stunned Egypt 2-0 in a Group D match of the 2023 AFCON qualifiers played in Lilongwe.
