5 things you need to know about Orlando Pirates’ new coach Jose Riveiro
DStv Premiership giants Orlando Pirates on Saturday announced the appointment of their new Spanish coach Jose Riveiro. Here are five things you need to know about the new man in charge.
- BORN IN VIGO
The Spaniard was born in Vigo, Galicia, and began his coaching career at an early age; and took over his first senior team, CD Teis in the regional leagues shortly after. After three years in charge of the team, he spent two seasons as an assistant and coach of Rápido de Bouzas’ youth categories before returning to Teis.
2. HE STARTED HIS MANAGERIAL CAREER AT 35
Riveiro, who holds a UEFA Pro License, started his managerial career in 2011 coaching Celta Vigo youth teams. In 2014 he moved to Finland and served as an assistant manager in various teams, starting as an assistant manager of FC Honka; in 2015 joined PK-35 and, in 2016, linked with HJK Helsinki.
3. HE LANDED HIS FIRST MANAGERIAL JOB IN 2018
In 2018, the Vigo-born mentor landed his first managerial job with Finland outfit FC Inter Turku. He guided the club to a second-place finish in Veikkausliiga to send the team to European competition. He featured in the 2021/22 UEFA Conference League; however, they were knockout in the qualifying stages.
4. HE FINISHED SECOND IN HIS MAIDEN MANAGERIAL SEASON
In his first season in charge, Riveiro led Inter to the second position in the Veikkausliiga, qualifying the side for a European competition after six years. On 25 September 2020, he renewed his contract for the 2021 campaign. For the 2022 season, Inter replaced him with Miguel Grau.
5. HIS STYLE OF PLAY
In 102 matches he managed at FC Inter Turku, he won 56, drew 13 and suffered 33 defeats. The 46-year-old who believes in pressing attacking football speaks Spanish and English. He is described as a modern, progressive coach with exciting, attacking football as his philosophy.
