No honeymoon period for treble-winning Yanga
Young Africans
Yanga assistant coach Cedric Kaze says the team will take a breather before resuming pre-season preparations later this month.
Yanga completed the domestic treble when they beat Coastal Union 4-1 to lift the Azam Federation Cup at the Sheikh Amri Abeid Stadium on Saturday after the dreaded penalty shootout.
The resurgent league champions had to come back from behind twice in the game, eventually settling it after the dreaded penalty shootout, thanks to the heroics of Malian goalkeeper Djigui Diarra, who saved two spot-kicks.
The new title triumph saw them add a third trophy to their cabinet, ending a five-year drought in style. They also won the Community Shield and the NBC Premier League title, an extraordinary feat they achieved without tasting defeat.
Nonetheless, Kaze admits that soon, they will have to regroup and focus on upcoming challenges.
“To win the treble – the three trophies we were playing for this season is absolutely amazing and unbelievable. The commitment of everyone at the club – the players, the fans, the technical team and management – is the reason we’re here.
“We’ll take some rest and then prepare the team for next season. We know that now we’re going to be in the Caf Champions League, and we’re going to be the team to beat because we finished the league unbeaten.
“It’s going to be twice as hard, and we need to strengthen the team to have a deep squad because there will be many competitions to play,” Kaze told FARPost.
He said they had a clear vision in terms of the reinforcements they need to make for the upcoming season, with former Kaizer Chiefs forward Lazarous Kambole already announced.
“We have a clear vision of the qualities we want to add. If we have a good pre-season, we will be fine.”
