Ex-Pirates captain finds new home
SuperSport United have completed the signing of a former Bafana Bafana captain and one of Gavin Hunt’s most trusted defenders.
Hunt was confirmed as the new Matsatsantsa coach on a two-year deal last week.
With his former captain at Bidvest Wits, Thulani Hlatshwayo, having recently parted ways with Orlando Pirates, the two have reunite at the Pretoria-based club.
FARPost on Monday reported that the 32-year-old started training with United on Monday with a one year deal signed.
The club later confirmed on Monday afternoon. “SuperSport United is delighted to announce the arrival of former Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana captain Thulani Hlatshwayo on a one-year deal with an option to renew,” the club said in a tweeted statement.
He and Hunt enjoyed a memorable spell at Bidvest Wits between 2014 and 2020, winning the league title and Telkom Knockout trophy.
Hlatshwayo comes to the club with a wealth of experience having played over 300 domestic games and captained Bafana with just over 30 caps under his belt.
The Soweto-born defender’s stint at Pirates was not as fruitful as he only managed 39 appearances in two years at the club.
Hunt is excited on the club’s new acquisition, “The signing of “Tyson” is a wonderful addition for the club and he comes with a lot of experience.
“He was the Bafana Bafana captain as well as my captain at Bidvest Wits, we won trophies together and he’s definitely ready to get working and to get going again. It’s a huge opportunity for him and for us at the club.”
