CONFIRMED: Baroka to play their home matches in Lebowakgomo

Following their relegation from the DStv Premiership to the Motsepe Foundation Championship at the end of last season, Baroka have now confirmed their new home venue.

Bakgaga played their matches at the New Peter Mokaba stadium during their seven years stay in the Premiership.

With the return of Sekhukhune United to Limpopo and Marumo using the venue, it meant the 2018 Telkom Knockout Cup winners had to find a new venue.

It was expected that Bakgaga would use the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium as their new home. But Polokwane City and newly promoted side Magesi are expected to utilise the same facility.

Speaking to FARPost on Wednesday, Baroka Chairman Khurishi Mphahlele has confirmed that the Baroka Village in Lebowakgomo (50km away from Polokwane) has been given the green light by the league to host their 2022/23 league matches.

Their alternative venue will be the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane.

“It is approved; it was approved last year. We can’t play DStv Diski Challenge matches if it has not been approved,” said Mphahlele.

“It was approved by professor (Ronnie) Schloss. We are going to play there; when the league releases the fixtures, it will be Baroka Village. This club belongs to the people of Limpopo, and we want them to walk to the venue to see their club. We have been using cars and buses to the stadiums. This time we want to walk to see our team play.

“To us, it is a privilege to host matches closer to the people. It has never happened before; the last time something like this happened was when we were playing in the second division (now ABC Motsepe League) at Ngwana-Mohube secondary school field,” he said.

“It is actually a blessing in disguise because if we succeed (to gain promotion), we are not going to move even when we are in the DStv Premiership.”

Baroka are set to unveil its new players, kit and sponsors on 30 July.
