How Al Ahly have fared post-Pitso Mosimane
The 17th of July marked precisely a month since Pitso Mosimane parted ways with Al Ahly and FARPost looks at how the Egyptian giants have fared since his departure.
Mosimane’s last match in charge of the Cairo giants was against Wydad Casablanca in the CAF Champions League, and it ended 2-0 in favour of the Moroccans.
After missing out on a third successive Champions League title, the club announced that Mosimane was leaving. It has been just over four weeks since ‘Jingles’ last sat in the dugout at Ahly, and judging by the club’s recent form, the results haven’t improved.
Exactly two days after Mosimane’s departure, they played a 2-2 draw with bitter rivals Zamalek. They were under the tutelage of Samy Qomsam, who served as Mosimane’s assistant while at the club.
In their next fixture, they edged Ghazl El Mahalla 2-1 before losing 3-1 to Smouha. They then played a goalless draw against El Gouna with the following result a convincing 4-0 win over Future, which was Portuguese tactician Ricardo Soares’ first match in charge after replacing the former Mamelodi Sundowns coach.
Over the weekend, Fagray Lakay’s Pyramids added to their woes with a 2-0 win over them.
The team has drawn twice and lost twice since the former Bafana Bafana gaffer left Cairo. They have dropped seven points in four league games as their rivals remain in control of the title’s destiny.
They are in third place with two games in hand, six points behind their eternal rivals Zamalek, who have collected 57 points from 25 games.
Lakay’s Pyramids still have a chance to win the league as they trail Zamalek by four points with nine games before the curtain comes down on the Egyptian league.
The White Knight, as Zamalek are affectionately known, won the league title last season and would want to retain it after their struggles in the Champions League.
The Egyptian Premier League comes to an end in August.
