Seoposenwe insists “no pressure” in Golden Boot chase

Banyana Banyana striker Jermaine Seoposonwe says she is not pressured to scoop the Golden Boot at the Women’s African Cup of Nations as her focus is on the semi-final against Zambia so that the team can get a positive result and reach the final.

The Cape Town born-forward is the joint second top scorer in the tournament with two goals. She is at par with the Copper Queens duo Grace Chanda and Avell Chitundu and Super Falcons’ Uchenna Kanu. The quartet is a goal behind Ghizlane Chebbak and Resheedat Ajibade of Morocco and Nigeria, respectively, with three goals each.

“As a forward, I want to positively contribute to the team, which means scoring goals that our team can win, but the objective is to make it to the final. If I get another goal, so be it, it’s my job, it’s probably what the coach needs me to do, so I’m going to do my best,” Jermaine Seoposonwe told the media.

“Whoever scores in the game scores. We are not trying for individual awards. We are a team, we came as a team, and we want to win as a team. Hopefully, everyone can collectively contribute to the goals of the team. I think my teammates are fully focused on that and not anything else.

Relating to their last result, the 28-year-old admitted that it wasn’t one of their best matches despite emerging victorious to secure a spot for next year’s World Cup.

“I think we didn’t play the brand of football we wanted in our last match. I think we came out well after the goal. We went into our comfort zone and didn’t continue to play well as a team.”

“We qualified for the World Cup. Now we look forward to the semi-final, which is our next big game. We want to focus on that and not look too far ahead. We want to be in the final, but we need to focus on this game, how we can get a positive result.”

The battle of Southern Africa for a spot in the final will be played on Monday at Stade Mohamed V (19h00 South African time). In the second semi-final, hosts Morocco take on the reigning champions Nigeria at Stade Prince Moulay Abdallah (22h00 South African time).
