Ex-Swallows defender trying luck at Highlands Park
Ex-Swallows defender Mbonisi Chagi was spotted at Highlands Park as his search for a new home seems to be headed in the right direction.
The speedy fullback has been training with ABC Motsepe side Highlands Park for the past two weeks to seal a deal ahead of the new season starting in a few weeks’ time.
The 24-year-old was part of the Dube Birds 2019/20 GladAfrica Championship title-winning squad, which gained DStv Premiership promotion. However, there was a change of plans as AmaSwaiSwai made a u-turn on the left back, terminating his contract just after promotion.
Known as “Bhasera” on the field of play because of his similar style to former Kaizer Chiefs defender Onismor Bhasera, Chagi joined TS Sporting after leaving The Birds’ nest.
However, after making three appearances, it proved to be a failed stint after his contract was terminated. Now at Highlands Parks, everything seems to be falling into place for the Eastern Cape-born player.
“I’m happy I’m back in the field of play again. All is good and looking positive at the moment, but at this stage, no deal has been made, and there have been no talks about the contract,” Chagi told FARPost.
“My main focus is on getting a contract; all I need to do is keep pushing and working hard to get a deal at the club. I have settled well. Everyone has been welcoming and accommodating, the players and the coaches.”
The Spears FC graduate further opened up about his shocking exit from the Soweto-based outfit.
“I was disappointed not to go back to Swallows after being part of a huge success [gaining promotion]. I was looking forward to playing with top players in the topflight [DStv Premiership]. That’s football. Sometimes it doesn’t work out the way you would have planned it,” he added.
According to FARPost sources, Motsepe Foundation Championship side AmaTuks are also monitoring the player.
