Hunt resigns himself to losing Ronwen Williams
SuperSport United head coach Gavin Hunt has resigned himself to losing Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, with SABC Sport reporting that he has signed a five-year deal with Mamelodi Sundowns.
Hunt gave an update on the latest regarding the imminent move of their number one goalkeeper and captain Ronwen Williams.
As reported by FARPost on Tuesday, the 30-year-old was spotted at Chloorkop, Sundowns headquarters. A club source on Wednesday said they were looking to conclude the deal within the next 24 hours.
Matsatsantsa are currently in Polokwane, Limpopo as part of their pre-season training camp minus their longest-serving captain.
“Right now, as I stand right now. Obviously, there have been discussions, we know things are on the go. He is not here (pre-season camp in Polokwane) 2 or 2, put one on one together yah,” Hunt was speaking to journalists at the Ranch Hotel where the team is having a week-long camp.
“Obviously something has to happen because he has been a great servant for the club for 19 years. I gave him his debut, and the opportunity has come for him and you can’t deny the opportunity he has been given. I don’t know if everything has been done as we stand but obviously, by the hour by the minute, things are happening; that’s all I can say really.”
Meanwhile, Hunt is impressed with the talent that he has found in his second stint at United.
“Obviously there is a very new group of players here, a very young group of players. More I don’t know than I do now and that is always difficult. I have been here for a week and yeah it’s exciting.
“There is a lot of talent but talent means nothing if we don’t get them right in terms of the mentality and how we want to play. But there is a lot of talent here, a very young team so it’s exciting,” said Hunt.
United are set to open its DStv Premiership campaign with a home clash against Chippa United on Sunday, 7 July.
